The 46th edition of The People ‘s Song – Maltese Song Festival
will be held on Saturday 30 July 2022
in Pjazza Teatru Rjal with the participation of the Malta Concert Orchestra ,

always as permitted by health regulations.
If this is impossible, the committee offers an alternative.

L’Ganja tal People’s is supported by the Maltese Council for the Arts
and the Cultural Agency for Valletta.

1. THE FESTIVAL

1.1 The People’s Song festival Maltese Song Festival is a festival of original songs in Maltese, performed and accompanied live by the Malta Concert Orchestra .

The festival is organized by the L-Ganja tal-Poplu committee with the collaboration of the Malta Concert Orchestra and Pjazza Teatru Rjal , the Maltese Council for the Arts and the Cultural Agency for Valletta.

1.2 The main objectives of the festival are:

(a) to promote quality Maltese song;

(b) to create an opportunity for composers and authors to deliver their song to the Maltese public;

(c) that, even after the festival, continues to help Maltese artists find an ever-larger audience for their song.

1.3 The festival takes place in three phases:

(a) the first selection phase, in which a number of semifinalists are selected from all the songs submitted;

(b) The second phase of the selection, in which the semifinalist songs are heard live, and from which the finalist songs are selected;

(c) The final evening, The People’s Song , which will take place on Saturday 30 July 2022, where the winners will be announced.

2. THE SONGS

2.1 To enter the festival the songs must be:

(a) original, meaning their lyrics and music have never been published or broadcast;

(b) with lyrics in Maltese;

(c) not longer than three minutes and forty-five seconds.

2.2 The theme of the song is free , meaning the author can write on what he wants.

This festival encourages the writing of quality songs that express thoughts, experiences, tastes, desires, relationships and aspirations both on a personal basis, as well as as a people on this island, both as citizens of the world. Songs with a theme of love or friendship, funny or satirical, etc., also have a place in this festival. We appreciate songs with sincere and genuine thoughts that express the author’s experience.

2.3 The musical style is free.

The Maltese language adapts itself well to be interpreted with various musical styles. It is therefore good to explore new and innovative idioms and styles.

2.4 These criteria will be used by the jury during their adjudication and should also help one to write a quality song:

·

The song has a clear and unified thought

· The song is well divided into verses, chorus etc. This does not exclude different forms than usual.

· The words of the song are well understood (pay attention to the accent of the word both during the writing of the song and in the interpretation).

· Words that evoke an emotion in the listener

· The words are singable and memorable

· The words are well placed together

· The music and the melody add to the emotion of the song

· Music keeps the listener interested and involved

· Words and music marry well together

· The song expresses the theme in a fresh and new way

· The melody is catchy and you will remember it

· The song appeals to the people

** Note: Regarding the musical arrangement – there is no need to use all the instruments provided in the orchestra. Sometimes the use of an instrument/s that stands out gives character to the song and some other instruments if needed, can be used in the background.

2.5 Songs with a vulgar theme and/or partisan propaganda will not be accepted.

2.6 Persons involved in the organization of the festival as well as the conductors of the orchestra cannot have a part in the songs that will be submitted in the festival.
